iCloud suddenly asking for password for public shared calendar

I'm on a mac, my wife on Windows10/Thunderbird. I have a public calendar she's subscribed to. When I upgraded to Sierra, suddenly iCloud asks for a username and password for this public calendar. The message we get is:

A user name and password are being requested by https://p08-calendarws.icloud.com. The site says: "MMCalDav"

My own username/password doesn't work. The calendar is definitely set as public, marked that way on my mac and iPad. What can I do so she can see my calendar?

Try turning it off, temporarily, and see if the error occurs again for your wife.

Hi, thanks for your help. I turned it off, and now I can subscribe, but there's nothing there, none of the events show up. I gave it a little time, and tried synchonizing. But nothing. Adding an event on my computer shows up immediately on my iPad, but still nothing shows up on her machine.

An update. After closing thunderbird and reopening, it asks for the password again, and I can't stay subscribed. So the problem is unchanged from turning off 2 factor....

It likely needs an app-specific password.

Thanks for your help. I read about this, it makes sense. So I used (on my wife's windows machine) my iCloud username and an app specific password, and it accepted it, even when closing and restarting Thunderbird, but still no events show up.

Thank you! This solved my issue. Like you, I had made the calendars private and then public again, but you have to log out of iCloud and log back in before making them public again. Everything works now, thanks so much.
