Q: My nano 6th gen is no longer responding to my earbud's buttons or mic.

My iPod nano 6th generation suddenly stopped responding to my earbud's remote buttons and microphone. I frequently use the voice memo app, but now the app doesn't appear because my mic isn't being recognized. I have tried multiple earbud sets with remote and mic, and none of them want to work on the iPod. I tried the earbuds on different devices (iPod Touch 4th gen, iPad 3rd gen, multiple cell phones) and those devices respond to the buttons and mic. I tried to start a chat with Apple support online, but my serial number isn't being recognized.

The iPod is version 1.2 PC with 8 GB storage.

First, do a Reset (restart) on the iPod, if you have not already

Learn how to reset your iPod - Apple Support

If that does not help, you may want to do a Restore on the iPod using iTunes.  This erases the iPod, reinstalls its software, and sets it to default "factory" condition.  The Restore button is on iPod's Summary settings screen in iTunes.  A software-related issue would be resolved.  After the Restore, set it up like before,  and try again.

If that does not help either, and you have rule out faulty headphones, the iPod probably has a hardware problem.

One more thing...  Use a flashlight to look inside the iPod's headphones jack.  Make sure there is no obvious debris or dust accumulation partially blocking the connection points.
