How to display invisible characters (space, return, etc.)

How do you make the Numbers (4.0) app show invisible characters such as space and carriage return?

Hi hermeneus,

Like Wayne, I know of no method to directly display invisibles in Numbers.

Pages (versions 4 and 5 checked) will display invisibles in the text body or in a text box, but not in a table.

Pages v4 (Pages '09) can convert table to text (a list separated by tabs and returns) using the menu item Format > Table > Convert table to text. The reverse conversion is available via the same menu item, which toggles the position of 'text' and 'table' depending on what is selected.

This menu item is not included in Pages v5.

One indirect method is to:

  • Select the cells containing the text you wish to examine. Copy.
  • Launch TextEdit, and open a new document. Paste.
(The result will be a multi-column list of the text displayed in the Numbers table.)
  • Select All (command-A). Copy.
  • Open a new Pages (5, should also work with v6) document.
  • Paste the copied list into the Pages doc.
  • Go View > Show Invisibles (or press command-I)

Regards,

Barry

Thanks to two of you.

It's a huge list of English vocabulary words with their definitions, which contain spaces and other punctuation marks and could be troublesome to edit when invisible. It's greater than 500 rows and so I cannot use the pages app for it. (I copy and paste them from numbers to pages when printing. It's easier to maintain the list itself on numbers.)
