Q: Yosemite bootable install disk only half recognized

Hello,

I am in the process of upgrading to Yosemite from 10.8.5 and have created a bootable Yosemite install drive on a 100G SSD connected via USB.

The disk shows up in the "startup disk" setting in the "systems settings" (sorry if these names aren't exactly correct as I use a Japanese version), and I can select the drive so I'm assuming the disk must be blessed, but when I reboot, Mac reboots on its built in harddrive.

I tried rebooting while holding the option key down, but this time the Yosemite install drive will not even show up.

Does someone have some idea of what might be going on and how I can fix this?

Thank you!

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

You need to redo the external drive because the OS on it isn't being recognized as bootable. How did you create the bootable external drive?

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

I did the Terminal command line thing.

I have since done the same thing on a firewire drive and this time it might be working.

"the OS on it isn't being recognized as bootable"

The thing is, it shows up in the "Startup disk" option in system settings (preferences?) and is selectable. Once selected a nice message shows up saying that the computer will startup with the name of said disk. Is there such a thing as a non-bootable disk showing up here?

Thanks again. I will repost how things go with the firewire drive.

    Cheers

    Hi Eric,

    Just an update.

The installation went well via the install disk I made on a firewire harddrive. It still puzzles me because

    a) I used the same terminal trick to make either disk, and

    b) the first disk actually shows up in the startup disk preference.

Oh well, I guess that's life

    Thanks again and be well.

I'm not getting a clear picture of what specifically is happening, but I think you should start a new thread with a title specific to your situation. HTH.
