You don't say what you mean by not working properly, however...

Your Apple TV may have become paired with another remote. Hold the remote close to and pointed at the Apple TV, hold down the menu and Rewind buttons together for 6 seconds or until you see a broken chain icon on screen.

My Apple TV 3rd generation (remote controle model A1294 Aluminum) is now dead, will not connect to Apple tv, battery is new and battery compartment is clean, How can I fix this, buying a new remote is out of the question, because it might not solve the problem.

Yes I tryed what you suggested, still no results, the remote is dead, does not function, can I fix this? how do I know that the battery is making contact? battery is new and the compartment is clean.
