Q: photoanalysisd still chewing CPU after 2 weeks

This is happening on my 2013 27" iMac, my 2012 Mac Mini, and my 2014 MBA. Not constantly, but most of the time that process is running and slowing my macs while causing the fans to whir. I had read you could check progress by looking at "people" in Photos, but the faces all appear to be analyzed. And having Photos open does NOT stop the process.

Any ideas? I do have a huge photos library (>200GB), but this long seems excessive.

    Greetings Drew T,

Thanks for your post! It looks like the photoanalysisd process is taking a lot of system resources on all of your Macs causing their fans to kick in. I know I have a rather large library myself. I will be more than happy to help see what we can figure out.

Since this is happening on all your devices, it is likely still processing some additional faces. Each device only stores the faces locally and won’t sync them. I believe this will eventually calm down over time. Though there are some things you can try just in case it’s not still processing faces.

I recommend resetting the SMC settings to make sure the power management system is kicking on the fans at the appropriate times. Also, booting to safe mode to clear out system cache files and run some system checks would be helpful.  Below are helpful articles to get you started on those two steps.

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

    Take care!
