    Hello forrestwife!

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.  You mention that you're unable to get your iPhone out of portrait lock.  It's a nice feature when it works but I'd want to be able to switch back and forth at will too!  It's my pleasure to help you out today.

    Let's start by restarting your iPhone:

    Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    If a normal restart doesn't resolve the portrait lock, I'd like you to also try doing a forced restart, also mentioned in the above article.
