Q: using Mail: error message

When I delete a message in Mail, I get this error message:

An error occurred while moving messages to mailbox “(null)”.

Then, if I say OK, the deletion goes through.  How do I stop getting this error message?

    Hello, Hermione8!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!  I see that you are getting an error when you try to delete an email in your Mail app.  I know when I delete a message, I want it to go away without an extra click!  I will be happy to help resolve this.

If this is an IMAP type account you're using (like Gmail), it might be a setting within the Mail app's preferences causing this error.  If you are actually using Yosemite (you posted in the Yosemite community), see this document for steps to follow in order to designate which folder is your "Trash" folder:

Mail (Yosemite): Use a specific mailbox to store messages on an IMAP server

If you have macOS Sierra instead, use this article (see the quoted section below the link):

Mail for Mac: Mailbox Behaviors preferences in Mail

    Trash Mailbox

Select a mailbox on the mail server or on your Mac to store deleted messages, or choose None.

This option is available only for IMAP accounts.

Note: If you select None, deleted messages may temporarily remain in a mailbox, but are hidden or dimmed. To show or hide these messages, choose View > Show Deleted Messages or View > Hide Deleted Messages.

Make sure that your Trash mailbox is selected there in Mail > Preferences > Accounts tab > Trash Mailbox.

    Have a great day!
