I have el captain and want an alternative boot drive for this older laptop

I have an older macbook pro with osx installed. My present internal hard drive is loosing the boot sectors and several times I have had to use the disk utility to repair the boot.

I have a WD portable that is formatted for MAC. How can I get OS X boot installed on the WD drive?

MacBook Pro (17-inch 2.4 GHz), OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

You can install macOS on the external disk

You can clone an existing, working macOS to the external drive
