Trying a clean reinstall
archived volume
booted into recovery mode
wiped volume and reformatted in GUID
prepared to reinstall OS
inputted apple ID, password
then, this:
"The recovery store purchase failed."
what have I done?
what do I do?
please help--wife will kill me if i don't correct this.

If your wife is going to terminate you, I'm guessing it's her computer? If so, it probably wants HER Apple ID.
we share an apple ID (I know, I know--not optimal--but that's what we do)
I've resorted to employing internet recovery--which only launched after a second attempt. But now original OS downloading (at first I thought loading Mountain Lion was a glitch; now I understand).
Saved to live another day 😁
