Q: stuck in bootcamp

Hi Guys. I have a serious problem here. For a year or more I've been succesfully booting into Windows via the Option button after the 'Chime'. Well yesterday I had a problem booting the Mac up and it gave me the option of booting into safe mode but I ignored that as I have done in the past and it then gave me the option of which Disk to boot inot so I chose Windows as that was where I wanted to go. Now unfortunately it seems to have made this the default.

The problem is when I press Option after the chime I only have the option of Windows not OSX. I have never had a choice, always been just the Windows drive icon.

There is not drive icon in the windows system tray (that I can see anyway).

Is there a way to change the startup disk within Windows and then reboot?

Pehaps there is some script I can type into the CMD prompt.

 

Any answers would be so gratfuly received as I have all my docs and just everything on the OSX.

    If you check Windows Control Panel -> System -> Bootcamp, it should give you the option to switch to OS X, if the Bootcamp drivers are installed properly. Otherwise, try a NVRAM reset - How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support - and test the Alt/Option method.

    Thank you for your quick reply, I cannot find the Boot Camp folder in control panel which is a worry. I've looked in hidden files too. I'll try the NVRAM now but I'm worried the OSX has no boot information now. I tried removing the HDD where the windows partition is, leaving the SSD where OSX is but all I got was a white screen. when I held Option down I did get the pointer up but that was all.

    What is the year/model of your Mac? What is the version of Windows?

     

    If Bootcamp drivers are properly installed, you should also have a Bootcamp icon in the Windows System Tray.

    Early 2008 MacPro. El capitan latest update. Windows 10 latest update too. When I installed Bootcamp, after a lot of bother, I just assumed as it started working that the drivers would be installed. I can't find the grey diamond icon in the system tray

    The Early 2008 MP does not official W10 drivers from Apple. However, you can download BC drivers from Install Windows 7 and earlier on your Mac using Boot Camp - Apple Support and try to install them with Administrative rights and computability mode and test.

     

    Can you post  the output of the following OSX Terminal commands so we can check a few things?

     

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

    sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

     

    How many physical disks do you have installed in the MP?

    Yes I was surprised when it updated to W10. The problem is the I can't access the Mac as I can't boot it up. The disk is visible in the Device Manager in Windows but that's it. I have an OWC Mercury Accelsior PCIe SSD where the OSX is and Hitachi HDS721010KLA330 ATA where the Windows partition is.

    If I don't answer later I'm at work GMT 1601. Will be back 0800.

    Burn the W10 ISO from Microsoft to a physical DVD-R SL, if possible. Disconnect the PCIe OWC temporarily leaving only the Hitachi on (S)ATA. Boot from the W10 DVD, and check if the W10 installation can be repaired.

     

    M$ will upgrade to W10, ignoring some Mac-specific issues on W7-to-W10 upgrade.
