Q: Finder crashing on macOS Sierra

I have a late 2009 iMac, 3.33 GHz Core2 processor, 8GB RAM. After installing macOS Sierra, Finder crashes on me constantly. I have to reboot about five times daily.

  • Getting beachballs when clicking on an external drive or folder.
  • Getting beachballs when using folders and files on my computer with web apps or Mac apps (e.g. Logic).
  • When Finder crashes, I can't relaunch it.
  • When Finder crashes, and I try to shut down or reboot, my screen freezes and the system doesn't complete the shut down or reboot (I have to press my power button as a hard power down).
  • I already tried re-installing Sierra.
  • I already cleaned up my system Library application support folder from old and unused "stuff".
  • All of a sudden, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iPhoto and iMovie started downloading and installing on my iMac - this was very strange. I had already installed the new versions of Pages, Numbers and Keynote before Sierra was rolled out. Also, I don't see any updates in the App Store that relate to this spontaneous download.
  • Spotlight also crashed on me recently when doing a search.
  • I have read that Google Drive and dictation can cause this, but I don't have either installed/enabled.

I'll keep adding to this log as I find new things that cause my iMac to hang / crash.

If anyone has any tips, or has been successful in fixing this, please reply to this post.

Download and run Etrecheck from  https://etrecheck.com/ and paste the results here.

I also tried resetting the SMC today as described in this link per other related posts and suggestions. Let's see if this makes a difference or not.

Thanks! I ran Etrecheck and noticed I had some failed Google and Firewire audio launch agents and daemons. I went ahead and removed those from Libraries. I rebooted my computer and am running Etrecheck again. Nice software! Very simple and straightforward. Thanks!

Now to see if this helps fix the problem on my iMac.

Here's a summary of what I did. I haven't had to reboot my Mac in the past couple of days.

Hope this helps Mac users with this problem regarding Finder crashes, beachballs, and forced shutdowns and reboots.

After trying all that, my Mac still crashes from time to time: Finder hangs, beachballs, etc. So no, my problem is not (yet) fixed. I hope Apple releases a fix soon...

I'm on my third macOS Sierra software load. I did notice that my memory usage went significantly up with my second Sierra software load (about 7GB RAM out of 8GB), and then went back to normal (3GB out of 8GB).

However, still no luck. Finder still crashes on a regular basis. And when that happens, I can't shut down or restart my iMac. I have to perform a hard shut down.

On a good note, I did make use of Etrecheck to clean up a lot of unused "stuff", such as launch agents and daemons that I was not using anymore, my etc/hosts file, old plugins, and I finally removed Flash.

Still waiting for that macOS Sierra update...

OK, I read something else regarding Finder and "plist" files.

I went to Library/Preferences and deleted all the apple.com.finder.plist files I could find, as well as the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file.

    Let's see if this works...

    I tried something else today.

I tried running kextstat | grep -v com.apple in the terminal and saw that I have a "pacesupport" kernel extension running, called com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard. I think this is related to iLok, I have a few Logic plugins with this type of license. I uninstalled the iLok License Manager and all related Library items and folders (cache, preferences, etc.), launch agents, and launch daemons. I'm keeping everything in the trash for now, in case my Mac freezes again and turns out that didn't fix it.

After uninstalling all iLok items, I re-ran kextstat | grep -v com.apple and there are no results.

The only way to solve this problem was to completely restore my Mac to El Capitan using Time Machine. Hold command-R right when the computer starts to boot, then select Time Machine Recovery. I didn't have too many issues because I didn't have too many "new" files between Sep 20 and now, I just made a copy of those and transferred them back to my Mac after restoring.

I'm glad I did this, because Finder was crashing EVERY TIME after waking up from sleep.

After restoring to El Capitan, my Mac is stable once again. No more Finder crashes, beachballs, and hard shut downs. This was the ONLY fix after trying several different things.
