Q: Searching photos for objects

I know that the new version of Photos is supposed to be able to search for certain objects in the photo. For example, when I search for "Cat"  on my iPhone or iPad, I get over 1000 hits. When I search for "cat" on my Mac Mini, I'm only getting 22 hits – and those are only ones that have it as a keyword or title. I know that the MAC Mini has not been updated to Sierra as long as my iDevices have been updated to iOS 10 – but if it's been a couple of days Shouldn't it have started to analyze them at least a little?

Has the scan finished?  If you open the "People" album, does it still say "Scanning"? If your Photos Library is in iCloud and is large, it may take a very long time for the initial scan, more than a couple of days. Did you keep the Mac connected to power and running over night? On my iMac it needed more than a week for 45000 photos, even with all original photos stored locally as well.

I just checked.  It says it's scanned 0 photos.  "It will continue scanning the remaining 12,179 photos when you're not using the app and it's connected to power."

This Mini is on 24/7 because it's also my media server.  The app has been open since I installed Sierra over the weekend.  There's no reason that it shouldn't have started to scan folders, but it doesn't seem to have.

Any ideas?  I tried closing Photos and then reopening it.

try leaving Photos off rather than running - while it is not clear what "not using Photos" really means it is clear that is it is not running you are "not using Photos" - I always quit Photos when not using it and my people san is steadily  progressing (although very slowly) - If you quit Photos it should start making headway

I'll give that a try when I get home.  This mac is not the one that has the full-copy of everything.  I let my Macbook house the full-size copies and the Mac Mini has the optimized version.

I always assumed that for new photos to sync down from iCloud that I would have to start it up every week or so.  When I installed Sierra and knew that it had to analyze all of the photos, I just assumed that it had to be an open app.

So I should close the app for a period of time and then open it to check people to see if it's scanning?

Your choice - I keep it closed - Léonie keeps it open and minimized - either seems to work but if one way seems not to be working for you then give the other way a try - there is no documented answer that I have seen, just personal experiences

It's been almost 2 weeks now and it's still not analyzing for people and objects.  Any ideas?  It's been rebooted a couple of times and I've tried it with Photos both open and closed for extended periods of time.

When I click on the People tab, it still says the same thing it has since I installed Sierra a couple of weeks ago-- "0 photos scanned.  Photos will continue scanning your remaining 12,186 photos when you're not using the app and your Mac is connected to power."  Again, this is a Mac Mini that is on 24/7.

The Places album seems to look as I think it should. The new Memories section also looks correct-- although it's only showing three memory groupings and those are titled as a random dates. I'm not sure how they came up with those particular groups.

But analyzing photos for categories is in no way happening. Searches only find items with that term as a keyword, album name, or file name. None has the new categories as I'm seeing on my other devices.

It also may not be scanning to actually update "people". It almost looks like it's still the same "faces" recognition as it was in the previous versions.

Check in the Console.app (from Applications > Utilities), if the process photoanalysisd is running at all or perhaps giving error messages. Type "photo" into the search field of the Console and click "Diagnostic and usage " in the sidebar.

In my library the faces scan has finished and I am mostly seeing messages with respect to creating new memories.

The photoanalysisd may not be able to access the library.  Is your Photos Library the system photo library? Is it on a drive with a supported file system?

Earlier you said that the mini is your media server.  Is the library shared in any way between users or Macs?
