Highest Possible Graphics Card For Early 2009 Mac Pro

As the title suggests, I have an early 2009 Mac Pro with 12 GB of RAM.

I would like to update my graphics card to something better and I have no idea what card I can put into it. Ideally, I would like to put the last possible graphics card that was compatible for it.

I have no idea what I would be looking for PCI or PCI-e and what power supply I would be looking for that would support such an 'arcane' computer.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Best wishes,

Sergio

the 2009 mac pro 4,1 can be upgraded to a number of current aftermarket cards from Nvidia and AMD but in many cases the cards require custom flashing from the distributor and custom drivers. You need to purchase a card from a mac distributor because the "Windows" versions of these cards will not work out of the box and OS X will not support it without the 3rd party drivers. This procedure is not recommend by apple who would rather you buy a new mac pro and by new I mean something for $5K who most recent GPU offering is already 3 years old.

web search "Mac Pro 4,1 GPU" for further details.
