macOS Sierra : safe boot only - normal boot impossible

Hi everybody,

I need your help.

Since I upgraded to macOS Sierra, my iMac isn’t running properly :

twice the display ran amok and awry (artifacts everywhere) and I lost control

of the computer (no keyboard or mouse responding anymore).

I had to hard reboot, and now the system won’t boot in normal boot

(5 hours waiting with the apple logo display, the progression bar halting at mid-way).

Only in safe boot the system is functioning.

I did reset SMC, NVRAM; I entered in recovery mode to do a First Aid to the HDD; I did a reinstall of macOS Sierra. Nothing of these solutions bring back the iMac in a normal mode.

What else can I do ?

Looking forward to your answers :-)

Hi Centaurus38,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Sorry to hear about the issues you are having with iMac since the recent update. If the issues go away while in safe mode and were not resolved by reinstalling macOS Sierra, it would point to one of the things that Safe Mode temporarily disables as the likely cause. You may find the information outlined in the following article helpful:

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

It may also be useful to test for the issue in a new user. This should help isolate whether the issue is user specific (such as a user Login Item or user installed font). You may find this article helpful as well:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support

Regards.

Hi jameson.h, and hi everybody,

It's been a full month since I lost the ability to boot in normal mode. The update 10.12.1 did not change a thing.

I could, by chance, enter in normal mode again once this morning, but the display is littered with artifacts, since when I upgraded to macOS Sierra. Is my mac late 2009 out of order (because of the graphic card) ? Must I trash it to the bin ?

I tried all of the solutions given in this forum, but to no avail.

Does anybody have a solution ?

I lost hope 😐
