Mail won't accept gmail password

I am using Mac OS 10.6.8 and my mail won't accept Gmail password. I am able to log in on Safari and other devices. I don't use two step verification. I removed the gmail account and attempted to re-add it and I keep getting an error " The SMTP server “smtp.gmail.com” rejected the password for user “xxxxxxxxxxxx@gmail.com”
