Q: Pages 5.6.2, can't highlight and change text colour?

I've been using Pages 4.3 and just now changing over to 5.6.2 - I just tried to highlight one word in a document and change the colour - nothing happened.  Tried selecting the colour first then typing a new word and that didn't work either.  Am I missing something?  Is there no quick way to colour some text in 5.6.2?

To properly highlight a word or selection of words in Pages v5.6.2, you will need to select the text, click on the gear icon shown in the image below, and set your character fill color. To remove highlighting, select your highlighted text, click in the character fill color inkwell, and click on the transparency icon in its lower-right corner.

    Hi - Thanks for replying.

No, sorry I should've used the word "select" - I don't want to highlight the text, I want to change its colour.  And I realize it can be done by selecting the text then clicking on the colour icon beside the gear wheel - but that's a lot slower than it always was in previous versions, where you could just select the text and hit the colour icon in the toolbar.

And if you're working on a combination of more than one document, or photos and documents, having the formatting panel open is a waste of space - so if you wanted to colour a word you'd have to start by opening the panel...

If you want to change text color in Pages v5.6.2, you must still select the text, and then from the inkwell/color globe adjacent to the gear icon, choose your text color. You can only change the text color once, and any subsequent selection will require another trip to the inkwell or color globe.

If you are going to be changing to the same color of text frequently, then I recommend creating a character style in that color, instead of the disjoint approach to the color globe.

Pages '09 v4.3 has scores of usability features that were never added into the Pages v5 rewrite. I would recommend continued use of Pages '09 v4.3, and you will curse less under your breath, and be far more productive.

Yes I would love to stay with v4.3 but just recently I've had a strange intermittent problem with it which I haven't been able to solve.

Often, when I open existing documents either a portion, or all of the document is garbled.  All documents created with any text other than Helvetica I open in that session will be like that, except for bold or italic text, which is normal.  If I type new text it is garbled.

If I select the garbled text and change it to italic, bold, or Helvetica, it's instantly normal.  I can also add new text that way.

Same thing happens if I copy and paste from another source such as a paragraph off a website. If I quit Pages and reopen it, sometimes it goes back to normal.  Other times I have to restart my computer.

Here's a sample from a few days ago:

Nice simple solution.  Isn't what's happening with my Pages '09 an indication that something has gone seriously wrong with it?  I was afraid maybe I'd try to open it one day and all I'd get was an error message, and lose access to all my documents.
