Messages not connecting to Yahoo IM account?

Hi,

I cannot login either (I had not realised as I don't use it)

However going to the Yahoo Site and changing the password does not do anything.

Using their "Less Secure Apps" option does not do anything either (there was an email saying I was using access to mail via a non secure app - but I have not used their mail service for a very long time.)

Having said that reading further suggests it is not Mail (after OS X 10.9 is OK)

It does not mention about accessing their Messaging service.

There is no option in Messages to try to turn Off SSL as you can with AIM or Jabber accounts

I have looked around the help pages (a little bit) but have found nothing yet.

I used Wireshark to see what happens when Messages attempts to connect to Yahoo hoping to find some clues. I'm admittedly not very skilled at deciphering its output. It looks like at some point Yahoo is spitting back something about developer.messenger.yahooapis.com. There is more info about that here.

If Messages uses this API, and if the API has not been depreciated, I assume there is no reason why it should not continue to work.

There is no date on that page.

However it does seem the server name has changed.

In Messages the Yahoo account does not allow that change.

I have an older version of Messenger on my Macbook Pro (Snow Leopard) and it tries to connect to inside.msg.yahoo.com but it never seems to fully connect.

This is on port 80

It makes two other connections to 66.196.114.225

The app never finishes connecting not does it drop out and say that there is a problem.

I use Little Snitch to gather that info.

I think inside.msg.yahoo.com is (was) the little pop up that the official client would show once logged in with news blurbs and whatnot.

Messages is attempting to connect to 66.196.112.222 for me (ydnrws1.us2.msg.vip.bf1.yahoo.com).

Since Yahoo gave a heads-up about the changes to Messenger around the same time the Sierra betas were released you would think Apple would have removed it from Messages if they had no intention to support it in the future.

Supposedly classic Yahoo Messenger was shut off on the 31st of August, but perhaps they extended it beyond that. I know that was the case with MSN Messenger — which kept chugging along a couple months after the announced closure date.

On the other hand the Yahoo plug-in was never what the AIM and Jabber ones were (it never did the In-app Video/Audio stuff or Screen Sharing).

It is likely to go the same way as iChat Theatre, Formatting, various fonts of any choice plus other features.

I filed a bug report. I suppose if it's finally on the chopping block their response will either confirm or deny it.

I think users of the Yahoo-branded client (at least on Windows) were locked out before we were based on what a friend told me, who was unable to connect at least as of 9/23.

It's really a shame that traditional IM apps are dying. I am uninterested in mobile or browser-based alternatives. AIM still functions (with my old @mac.com address, nonetheless), as does GTalk (although, I think it only works over XMPP for users who joined before Google ended support for it). I was not sure about the last fact, so I advised the aforementioned friend to switch to Telegram — which has actively-developed desktop and mobile apps.

i've never gotten any kind of response from apple directly as a result of filing a bug report.

You rarely will get a direct response as in, "yes, that will be fixed in the next update." However, the status of the bug might get changed to something revealing.

So it seems Apple is not going to update Messages to support the new Yahoo Messenger implementation.
