Q: DVD Player crashes when changing audio

My DVD Player app recently started crashing whenever attempting to change the volume from mute. The laptop is a MacBook 12" retina 2015, using an external DVD drive that has worked fine for a year. Have tried on many different DVDs and they all load fine, the DVD player auto-starts, but they all open with no sound. If I attempt to increase the volume from 0 on the slider bar, the player crashes. If I try to access the audio through the 'Features' menu the menu does not load for Audio, and the disc set-up audio likewise is frozen to alteration. Other audio works fine on the machine. Any idea on what the issue could be? Thank you.

    Greetings bhan001,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It seems like you want to play a dvd on the MacBook connected through an external dvd drive. Since the application crashes using every dvd you have tried it may be trouble with the app itself. There are a couple things we can try to isolate and resolve the issue.  I would recommend you read these articles, booting into safe mode will disable any 3rd party apps that may be interfering with the DVD Player app. If the issue persists we can try a new test user to see if this is a profile issue or system wide.

Thank you kindly for your response! It was great to have some leads to test out. Unfortunately the Safe Mode option did not resolve the issue. Actually, it bizarrely rather exacerbated it. I noticed that the audio controls were disabled, so for e.g. if I pressed F11 to make it louder, the audio logo appeared but with a "ø" to say not allowed. Equally accessing the Audio through system preferences, I was disabled from being allowed to 'unmute' the sound. Signing back in with normal mode and set up has resolved the audio, but not the DVD crash unfortunately.

The issue is replicated across different user accounts also.

I should add software is also as up to date as it can be.

    Hey bhan001,

If I understand correctly, the issue persists across multiple profiles. This would mean it is trouble with the software itself and we should reinstall it to see if that resolves the issue. Since it is a bundled software with macOS we would need to reinstall macOS. I would recommend you read this article, it explains how to reinstall the software.

It's always a good idea to backup your data just to keep it safe.
