Q: Sharing & Permissions

We have both a MacBook and an iMac which are running Yosemite (10.10.5). Generally, I use the MacBook and my husband uses the iMac. I have my documents organized into folders on "my" MacBook. I work from home and generally use "my husband's" iMac during the day. I access my documents from the MacBook through a shared network. I have set up the sharing & permissions on many folders so that both of us have read & write permission on the files from each others computer.

The problem is that when I create a new document on one computer, I have to change the permissions so the other computer can edit it. It has become my morning routine to open the folder, click Get Info, and then set the permissions each day to all the documents in the folder (Apply to enclosed items).  I'd really like not to have to do this each morning and sometimes throughout the day too.

Is there any way to automatically set new documents to share permissions between users?  I've looked at the instructions on this Webpage: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/5689/permissions-for-new-files-in-share d-directory  but they are way too complicated for me.

Thanks.

iMac, iOS 10.0.2

Have you tried setting up a matching account on the iMac with the same user name, password, and account details?

No, and I don't think that will entirely solve my problem. While it would solve the problem for those files that I create and my husband doesn't need to edit, it would not solve the problem for files that I do want my husband to have complete sharing and editing rights to, such as family photos and documents pertaining to family matters.

I am frustrated because I took the time to set up my folders and files this way with the understanding that the sharing and permissions feature was "easy" and actually allowed people to share files!

    Thanks

You are welcome. Have you tried going to System Preferences/Sharing/File Sharing to add you and your husband there or all admin with read/write permissions?

Yes, when I set up the sharing access, I set it up in the System Preferences. I just checked again and for each folder I want to share, it has my husband's name listed with read & write access. It was some time ago that I set it all up but I recall purchasing and installing the Mac OS Server in order for sharing to work properly.

I while ago I tried using Automator to update the permissions on a regular basis but I couldn't get it to work. The last thing I have time for is spending a few days trying to learn automator to get this stupid thing to work.

    Thanks
