Q: recovering lost pages file-2 versions installed

Hey, when my battery died i lost some unsaved pages files(normally they are restored when i turn it on and open pages again) but I for some reason after my last update I have 2 versions of pages running.

I'm running El Capitan 10.11.4 and have both pages(iWork '09) 4.3 and pages 5.6.2 the lost files were in 4.3

I tried looking in the Containers directory, and when i find the files in the com.apple.iWork.Pages.....Package Contents>data>autosave  I find the files in the pages 5.6.2 version:(

Any suggestions??

Thanks a lot!!!

Not sure what you are asking.

Is it visible when you look at Open Recent Files in Pages '09?

You have 2 versions of Pages because you upgraded from Pages '09 and it was moved to the Applications/iWork folder so as to not ruin all your files and to also allow you to continue, if you so wished, to use the far superior features of Pages '09.

    thanks for the reply

in both versions when i look at open recent files, there are only files I had saved(and they are the same files in both versions)...i had a couple untitled unsaved files open on my desktop when my battery ran out(i had created these in  4.3)

so the question remains if there is any way to recover them?

and how do i delete the 5.6.2 version with out losing any older files(normally i would assume that an upgrade automatically deletes the old version and moves all the files over to the new version....)

    thanks!

You appear to not be noticing what you are using.

The two versions existed before your battery died and you appear to have opened your files in Pages 5.6.2 which converted the Pages '09 format to Pages 5.6.2 format. As Pages 5.6.2 is missing well over 100 features, conversion destroys some of the formatting.

    You can:

    Menu > File > Export > Pages '09

but that will not restore the missing formatting.

You have two versions of Pages on your Mac precisely because Pages 5 was so short of features, that that was the way Apple avoided a class action lawsuit from its users over damaged or unusable files.

You have two entirely different Pages applications with one common feature: autosave. However, unless you create a new document, and then immediately save it with a meaningful name — autosave is disabled, and you will lose documents when Pages hangs, or your Mac abruptly quits.

In addition to autosave, you should have Time Machine performing hourly backups to an external drive. Now, you have a secondary document retrieval possibility — providing that you initially saved your Pages documents.
