Calendar no longer showing month name

This is a new one, just booted up my laptop this morning and the menu bar was showing M10 5 Wed, which is also how it looks in Calendar. All the other months are the same (M01, M02 etc.).

Tried resetting PRAM, but can't see any Calendar prefs that I'd need to trash as the only one is the agent for synching.

Anyway to get my laptop to remember that it's October again? Not sure if it's connected but it also completely forgot that I have my trackpad set to tap-to-click and three fingers to drag, and that I have DND set in Notifications.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), 17" Early 2011, 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD

Hi Eric,

Not sure if this is connected, but I just opened a Numbers spreadsheet and all the figures are now displayed as GBP rather than £ (i.e. £23 is now showing as GBP 23.00), and Excel has started playing up with currencies etc. When I go to currencies, this is what is shown. What the..?

As this is just affecting my Admin account do I backup, erase and reinstall or is there an easier option around this?

Hi Ben Collier,

It looks like you are having some issues with your Mac showing the numeric numbers for the months, instead of the names of the months themselves. You are also having some issues with the trackpad preferences and Do Not Disturb for notifications. I can see how you'd want to get this all resolved. Let's see what we can do.

First, I'd like to have you set the trackpad preferences and Do Not Disturb notifications the way you want them and then boot the Mac into safe mode.

OS X El Capitan: Notifications preferences

OS X El Capitan: Start up in safe mode

Once you are in safe mode, please test out to see if the names of the months have returned and that the trackpad is still functioning as expected. If the names of the months did come back, please restart the Mac and open the Calendar app and check there to make sure the issue is resolved. If the issues didn't get resolved in safe mode, please create a test user and check. This'll help us to determine if the issues are system wide or user specific.

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a great night!

I don't see anything that might be affecting Calendar.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferenes, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Try running this program in your normal account , then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
