Q: Encrypted back-up disc

I have been using time machine regularly. I have file vault active on my Mac. My back-up disc is attached to my Air Port via USB. Heretofore, that disc couldn't be encrypted (I tried at one point). Now that I have installed Sierra, I get a message that I am backing up an encrypted disc to an unencrypted device. Of course, the reason I have file vault operative is that I take my laptop with me. My back-up disc is at home. I would prefer to have it encrypted for safety but it is not as critical as it is to have my laptop encrypted. Is there something I have to do or can I just continue to ignore that message or turn it off?

Have you tried encrypting your backup disk since installing Sierra? Did it work? If not, what is the error message?

I am absolutely new to apple and when asked about vault thing I guess I did activate it as well.No idea.

My machine just came back from a repair job.

    that as an aside

I wanted to back up with time machine and got:

Timemachine is backing up an encrypted disc to an unencrypted disc.

    My question is :

    What does that mean?

    Any consequences?

Can I change any of that?

    Should I?

One thing I am looking forward to is an intuitive use of this new fangled device...after years of blxxxy windows.
