mail app and contacts

When I type a sender's address into an email that I'm writing, the list of email address choices that pops up includes any old addresses that I have deleted from that person's contact info, as well as the current address that I'm using to send emails to that person. It is very confusing, and I have to go to their contact info to see which one is the current email address. How do I get only the email addresses that are currently in the contacts list to pop up?
