Q: Time Machine useless to roll back from El Capitan to Mavericks

Was thinking of updating my MacPro from Mavericks Server to El Capitan, so I:

  • forced Time Machine to back up to make sure I got every last change.
  • turned off Time Machine so it wouldn't backup El Capitan while I was installing & evaluating.
  • updated to El Capitan... I very quickly discovered many basic broken things, like USB. Apps that needed tedious hand updates. Mac OSX Server required update @ $20, 'cause I skipped Yosemite. ... and disturbingly, things that were now broken & didn't seem to have a fix!

After a few hours I decided El Capitan was a bad choice for me. No problem right? ... just restore from Time Machine.

  • restore from Time Machine. After restore, system turns power OFF on boot, while Apple logo & spinning gear is still up!!!    Several tries, with variations, reading crap on the WEB & hours wasted, no change.
  • had to reinstall Mac OSX from recovery mode over TM restore.
  • not sure if all of last backup was used since TM has no verify function, so used Migration Assistant to pickup anything missed, including system settings. Result was an unusable system.
  • repeat TM restore & reinstall Mac OSX
  • Some system settings lost, no clue how many. System updates already applied have to be reapplied.
  • Time Machine defaults to ON & IT DELETED ALL BACKUPS FOR THE DAY!!! ?? Doesn't appear to have touched previous days, just the day I did that last critical backup. Now I have no way of trying restore to different disc, to see if it is something strange about the SSD...

Stuff I read on the WEB warns about Time Machine being basic & should not be relied on... but Apple presents it as the answer to all world's backup concerns.

Needless to say I'm seriously p i s s e d...
