Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Community. I know how important it is to be able to rely on your iPhone working as expected, and I'd like to help you get your touch ID working as it should be.
Whenever we see issues like this after an update, it can help to remove the existing fingerprints and re-add them. This will ensure that any old settings in Touch ID are updated.
To remove the existing finger prints you can go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode. You'll be asked to enter your passcode, and then you can tap on each finger print and select "Delete Fingerprint". Afterwards you can select Add a Fingerprint to add them again.
If the behavior persists, or you run into any trouble, the entire community is here to help.

Thank you so much for your reply. Unfortunately it did not help to solve the problem completely, but the frequency of occurrence has been reduced. Thank you. Anyways, I shall tell the steps to replicate the defect.
1. Keep the phone in the locked mode and your display is off.
2. Now press the home button once, display gets on and you can see a lock symbol at the top of the screen as well a message "Press Home to Unlock" at the bottom of the screen.
3. Now just keep your "finger" on the home button.
4. You will see the message "Unlocked" at the top, but the screen is still in the locked mode and the message gets changed to "Press Home to Open". But at this instance, even if you press the home button screen doesn't get unlocked.
5. This issue is not coming always after installing the finger print, but can be replicated in once in 5 tries.
Regards
