Q: kernel panic report: kernel_task

To whomever may be reading - please advice!

I have had a few Kernel panics last week:

- kernel panic started while using photoshop lighroom cc

- computer restarted, panic occurred 20 min later

- computer restarted, didn't use any design or photo programs, panic occurred 10 min later

- logged in a separate temporary i have which has no files  - worked fine just checking emails, watching movies

- re-started on safe mode and saved all my valuable info to my external hard drive

- checked hardware through the computer's test = all fine

- re-installed the OS form scratch and re-installed programs.  Have stayed on El capitan and have not upgraded to Sierra yet.

- panic occurred once when i tried to use a cc design program.  Used the CS6 version and it was fine.

- panic occurred when i tried to open my lighroom library. Installed LIghroom Cs5 (older version) and started a brand new library - worked fine

- regular program use is fine: email, web surfing, movie watching

- last night worked on lightroom for a good 45 min-1 hr, then switched to photoshop cs6 for 20 min - computer had another kernel panic

- just today i worked on illustrator cs6 for 30 min and the computer had another kernel panic.

***looking back at the reports, most of them are associated with kernel_task

My computer:

MacBook Pro Retina mid 2012

2.6 GHz i7, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 ram

Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB

I looked up the latest report and it wouldn't let me post because of 'invalid characters' (not sure which ones)

try replacing underscore characters with hyphens, or post to a free pastebin.com account and provide the link (NOT a download -- no one who is thinking clearly will download a mystery file).

    1. panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff7fa8f2ebd5): "GPU Panic: ...
    2. /Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleGraphicsControl/AppleGraphicsControl- 3.12.8/src/AppleMuxControl/kext/GPUPanic.cpp:127

    That is a GPU panic.

It is almost always a Hardware problem.

If available to you, you should make an appointment for a free evaluation at the genius Bar at your local Apple Store. There is a service bulletin that MAY apply to your MacBook.

    thanks a bunch,

    Service Bulletin? how's that?

I live outside of the US (though purchased in the US) and no apple store - only certified resellers and a repair center

Outside of the US, with an Apple-Authorized Service Provider, the rules are different. You may have to pay for diagnosis, but sometimes that fee is refunded if they can do other work for a fee. (So be sure to ask.)

A service bulletin is just short of a recall, and is not made public. If an owner presents with a certain Mac, and a certain set of symptoms, they are supposed to (according to the bulletin) get a new motherboard provided they meet EVERY requirement.

The service bulletin says that Apple will pay for motherboard replacement on a certain subset of these MacBooks that also fail the VST test, so your repair costs MAY be quite low if yours has that exact failure. As always, you may not have the failure covered in the bulletin, so your mileage may vary. (Be sure to remind them yours may be covered by a service bulletin.)

    thanks a bunch,

now is it weird that the kernel panic never never happens when using the computer for web surfing, emailing, watching movies and using the regular apple software, but only (twice since re-installing the Os ) with adobe products (photoshop/illustrator ) but not even all the time (eg. I've worked on vector designs for an hour or so and no problem)..
