Midi timing issues with Yamaha EX7

Hi,

Firstly i'll introduce myself as this is my first post. I'm a recent Mac convert, mainly to use Logic 7, but also because OSX is far superior than any PC based OS at the moment 😀.

My main hobby is music composition and production and I like nothing more than to compose original compositions in my spare time (I'm also a guitarist, bassist, keyboardist and vocalist).

Right, the problem that I am experiencig is slight midi timig issues with my yamaha EX7. I've had to set the midi delay to about 16ms, which fixes the timing once the midi is recorded as audio, but when I play back midi notes from the sequencer they are slightly out of time with the click (this is weird because I would have thought that if it was in time one way that it would be in time all the time).

My sound card is a M-audio firewire solo and I'm using that with a midi sport 1x1.

Id like to find some way to get the midi notes in time before I bounce them down to audio as it makes it easier for me to compose that way.

I've done a quick search on this forum and I've noticed that someone has had a similar problem, but with me the problem is there all the time, not just at the beginning of the track.

Thanks in advance.

Those Yamaha synths up until the Motif Rack first gen. have been known to have MIDI timing problems when playing a busy arrangements. Are you experiencing problems with only one sound playing? A good way to check if the problem is with your computer system would be to borrow a module or keyboard from someone you know or lend one at your favorite music store and hook it to your system and see how it performs. Your midi and audion interfaces are good products. You shouldn't experience those problems.

This happens and has happened right from the start. It doesn't matter how many midi notes or parts I use, the problem is the same, even in a fresh track.

When I setup logic for the first time I went through the introduction assistant and there was a part that asked to setup any external midi devices. I fount my synth in there and selected it along with the midi ports it was plugged into. Could my problem have anything to do with that?

I've not tried any other midi devices yet as I can't get hold of any, but I will ask some friends if i can borrow something and see if that has the same problems.

As a quick work around I was thinking of setting the delay in the midi track window so the midi playback is in time while I'm writing and then setting it back to 0 once I'm ready to record the audio. I'll also have a play with the settings tonight when I get home from work to see if there is anything I can find.

Thanks for the help so far.
