Chinese characters on display with iOS 10.0.2

I recently upgraded my iPhone 5s (16gb) to iOS 10.0.2 and Chinese characters now appear on the home screen just below the time and date. How can I delete these characters? I have checked language settings and find nothing other than the English I prefer.
