2- There is a persistent set of nested folders that I cannot get rid of. Every time I try to trash it, it simply reappears a few seconds later:

    System > Library > Caches > com.apple.kext.caches > Startup

Items in the top-level System Folder are protected.

Do not attempt to directly delete or modify ANYTHING in the top-level System Folder.

If you succeed in deleting those files, your Mac is likely to never start up again.

If you want to rebuild the startup kext caches, Restart your computer in Safe mode (your Userid and password will be required), then restart in regular Mode and the caches will be rebuilt at that time (your startup will take slightly longer because of this).
