Q: My macbook pro is super slow after updating to Mac OS Sierra and apps won't open, take forever to open or crash a lot!

Hi Guys!

I also have this problem... I have a MacBook Pro, mid 2012. 2,5 GHz Inter Core i5, 4GB RAM.

After updating to Sierra, my computer just became as slow as a turtle... I have tried several quick fixes on it, reeboting and so on but nothing seems to work. This is by far the WORST UPDATE EVER. How can you release an update like this without even testing it among users first... I depend on my computer to work and now I'm screwed.... My 2011 Microsoft Office package won't work either so I am really desperate at this point....

I did the Etrecheck so if anybody could tell me what to delete or change to improve the situation a bit, I would truly appreciate it!!!

Thanks!

A variety of adware is installed. To learn about how that may have occurred so that you don't make that mistake again, please read How to install adware.

Click the [Remove] links to remove adware.

    Did you try that?

    Hi John,

    Thanks for your reply!

I think I have to manually look it up on my computer.... but I can't seem to be able to find it... Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Sorry I'm not too good when it comes to computers... Could you walk me through it on how to delete it?

It appears that you have or had CleanMyMac3 installed and remnants of the app are still on your computer. CleanMyMac3 must be uninstalled using its uninstall instructions not by dragging to the trash.

It also appears that it took an hour to run etrecheck. This is longer than it should take. This may indicate you have a failing hard drive. Back up your data now. Your time machine backup is not running.

Sure. First, some information is needed to determine the extent of the adware's presence on your Mac. To do that read the following:

Navigate to the following folder, and post its contents in a screenshot.

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents

To open that folder, copy the entire line above and paste it in the Finder's Go menu > Go to Folder... field. It should look like this:

    gt.png

Take a screenshot showing all that folder's contents, and post it in a reply. To take a screenshot read the Appendix in the following User Tip: Writing an effective Apple Support Communities question.

There will be additional instructions to follow.

For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware.

Review your Gatekeeper settings: OS X : About Gatekeeper - Apple Support. Gatekeeper is designed to help prevent you from inadvertently installing garbage software.

Thanks. I regret that I overlooked having had "CleanMyMac" installed on that Mac, which BobTheFisherman astutely noticed.

That changes things. It may be necessary to erase that Mac completely and reconfigure it from the ground up, due to the effects of having used it.

An essential prerequisite is the creation of a Time Machine or similar backup, so please do that before continuing.

I did not run it though. I tried to but cancelled it so it never finished doing whatever it is that it does. I've deleted it from my computer now along with a few other adwares that I found and the computer is running a lot smoother now. Still, I can always run a second test thingy to show you the results now and see what is going on

Do a backup of your data first. Then run etrecheck again and post the results.

In the same manner as before, please navigate to the following folder, and take a screenshot:

    /Library/LaunchAgents

There may be nothing in that folder, but if it contains anything please make sure the screenshot captures all its contents.

Repeat the above with the following folder:

    /Library/LaunchDaemons

Please post those two screenshots in a reply.

The information in those screenshots conflicts with the information in the EtreCheck report. Specifically, the two "justcloud" files in   ~/Library/LaunchAgents/ are missing from the screenshot. That means I am unable to provide you with additional instructions until obtaining more information.

Several possibilities come to mind. Either those files are hidden, or they are no longer present, or there is something incorrect about the EtreCheck report. Or, I am misinterpreting its output, which is also possible.

    I have two suggestions:

    1. Attempt to use EtreCheck to uninstall the adware according to the instructions for using that program.
      • As I understand it, you must create a Time Machine backup before it will allow you to do that. That's OK, because I would insist upon one also.
      • The difference is that while all I can do is take your word for it, "EtreCheck" has already determined no Time Machine backup exists.
      • So, regardless of what you decide to do now, you should create that backup.
    2. Copy and Paste the following command into a Terminal window, to determine if those files exist or are hidden:

    ls -laO ~/Library/LaunchAgents/

Terminal is in your Mac's Utilities folder.

The output you will see will look something like this:

    iMac08:~ john$ ls -laO  ~/Library/LaunchAgents/

    total 24

    drwxr-xr-x   4 john  staff  -       136 Nov 29  2015 .

    iMac08:~  john$

Please post that information in a reply.

Quit Terminal when you are finished with it.
