can you change the tempo without automatically affecting/stretching audio?

My work flow...

import an instrumental, then add a tempo meter to detect tempo... then change tempo of project... but OOOPS, that stretches the audio file... how can I change the tempo without affecting the audio file? Thanks!

The checkbox appears only for audio files that have tempo information included in their file.

Your (imported) files probably have no tempo info attached to them. They should, by default, always play back at the original pitch. So actually, you should not have a problem.

Let me be sure, then, that I understand your issue. Do you have:

1) You have imported audio files. You change the project tempo. The audio files do not play back at the original pitch anymore, but at a different pitch. That presents a problem.

2) Or, you do the same thing and all that happens is that the audio files are displayed at a different length, but they still play back at their "normal" pitch. That is not a problem, that is the natural behaviour. The audio file will retain its length (in time, i.e. minutes and seconds), whereas the number of beats it covers will change, as the beats not have a different length in time after you changed the project tempo

I can guarantee you that nothing is happening to your audio file, it'll sound the same at any tempo. The only thing that changes is the visual representation, because altering the tempo means you are altering the duration of the bars. The actual length of the audio file stays exactly the same. You can see this if you enable the (secondary) time ruler. Look at this 30 second long audio region for instance, it stays 30 seconds long:

As was mentioned already, if you import an audio file, then you won't see the "Follow Tempo & Pitch" parameter in the Region Inspector (only files recorded in that Project, copied between open Projects or Apple Loops). Besides using Flex, you can use the command Edit ➤ Tempo ➤ Detect Tempo of Selected Region... the following Dialog Window lets you set the various parameters (pay attention to that), and after that, the "Follow Tempo & Pitch" will appear in the Region Inspector (if Flex was unchecked in the Dialog Window). However, this is a little bit false advertisement, because the file will only follow Tempo but not Pitch.

Hope that helps
