Guest login gone missing

After installed Sierra and it's updates on my iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, Late 2015), I now have no option for a guest login. In User & groups, I have the box checked to allow guests. It worked fine before the update. Tried rebooting multiple times. Suggestions?

I had it go missing after a 'difficult' Sierra upgrade and assumed it was something to do with that (had ended up reinstalling system from Recovery Disk). Opened User preferences and it was showing as off but was ticked to be on and showed as on when I unticked it, at which point I came here looking for a quick fix rather than spending ages messing around, and found yours. Thanks for saving me more time!

Hey Tony Yandow,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. I can see from your post that you're unable to see the Guest account on your login screen even though it is enabled in System Preferences. I understand how useful this account can be and would be happy to offer some help to get this working again. If you haven't already, let's try and start your Mac into safe mode and see if we can find the guest login from there.

Safe mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening. It also verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed and deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files. The link below will show you how to boot into safe mode.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up

Starting up in safe mode

Follow these steps to start up into safe mode.

  1. Start or restart your Mac.
  2. Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key.
  3. Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.

After the Apple logo appears, it might take longer than usual to reach the login screen or your desktop. This is because your Mac performs a directory check of your startup disk as part of safe mode.

Let us know if you're able to see the guest account and login.
Regards.
