After installed Sierra and it's updates on my iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, Late 2015), I now have no option for a guest login. In User & groups, I have the box checked to allow guests. It worked fine before the update. Tried rebooting multiple times. Suggestions?
I had it go missing after a 'difficult' Sierra upgrade and assumed it was something to do with that (had ended up reinstalling system from Recovery Disk). Opened User preferences and it was showing as off but was ticked to be on and showed as on when I unticked it, at which point I came here looking for a quick fix rather than spending ages messing around, and found yours. Thanks for saving me more time!
Thank you for posting this easy fix. Decided to add the Guest user log in today, and saw that I had already set it up in Syst Prefs. Sadly, there was no "Guest user" icon to click on in log at login window until I followed your advice.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up
Starting up in safe mode
Follow these steps to start up into safe mode.
- Start or restart your Mac.
- Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key.
- Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.
After the Apple logo appears, it might take longer than usual to reach the login screen or your desktop. This is because your Mac performs a directory check of your startup disk as part of safe mode.
Let us know if you're able to see the guest account and login.

Thanks for the tip. Sadly it did not correct the problem. I tried both restart and reboot. Nothing. Everything else is working fine, but no option for the Guest Login at anytime.
I had the same problem. Disabling the guest user and enabling it fixed it for me.
This seems to be the fix, awful bug. Canned response of "Use Safe Boot" is a god awful waste of time. Mine got in a state where when I checked the box it would disable the Guest User. Quitting System Prefs and reopen re-synched the option.
