Does Apple Pay REQUIRE 3D Secure?

We are thinking about implementing Apple Pay in our mobile iOS application however we do not currently have 3D Secure set up as it is a US business. Do we need to implement 3D Secure in order to accept Apple Pay as a form of payment within our mobile application?

In the apple help article the following statement makes it sound like 3D Secure is optional "With Apple Pay, Touch ID or the device passcode can be used as the consumer device verification method, instead of the more traditional methods of PIN, signature for transactions in stores, or 3D Secure for transactions within apps." - Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method - Apple Support

Where as in the developer documentation there is a statement "You must support the 3-D Secure protocol; support of the EMV protocol is optional." - https://developer.apple.com/reference/passkit/pkpaymentrequest/1619257-merchantc apabilities

I guess that Apple Pay replaces 3D Secure for "frontend" client authentication but partly mimics 3DS-related stuff like cavv and eci during "backend" payment authorization exchanges between Apple, Pament Network Brands, Issuer and Acquirer banks. So "You must support the 3-D Secure protocol" probably implies that merchant should be backed up by registered 3D Secure terminal in Acquirer Bank. But it's definetly not required that mobile app must implement 3D secure.
