Q: messages is locked up!!

The messages app on my MacBook Air became progressively slow to open and would occasionally lock up requiring me to Force Quit to get out of but a few days ago it completely locked up and now it freezes the moment I launch it.

Thoughts? Suggestions?? Ideas?? Solutions??
