Where did my backed up pictures go

I backed up my iPhone with iTunes and when I go to photos I cannot find my pictures, my device appears while connected but not the pictures. Where did they go? I do not want to use iCloud.

When you backup an iOS device to iTunes the photos in the Camera Roll album are included in the backup.

That backup is located here:

Locate backups of your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple

However, you need a computer app to access data in the backup like:

To save your iPhone photos to your MacBook Air, connect the iPhone to a USB port and launch the Image Capture application. Now you can save the photos from your Camera Roll to a folder on your Mac.

Or launch the Photos.app and import the photos to Photos for Mac.
