Q: I have a music library of about 7.6GB.  I have an older iPod nano which has a capacity of 8.0GB. When I try to sync my library onto the nano it only accepts about 1.68GB.  How can I fix this?

I have an iTunes music library of about 7.8GB of songs.  I have a 8.0GB iPod nano.  When I try to sync my music to the iPod the IPod only accepts about 1.68GB.  I have tried to restore and re-sync - same results.

Are all of your songs stored locally, in your computer's iTunes library?  iTunes cannot sync songs that are accessed by streaming from Apple's servers ("iCloud").  To check, find a song that does not sync to your iPod in your iTunes library.  Right-click it, and Get Info.  On Info window File tab, find location.  Does that location show a file path to where that song's file is stored on your computer's drive, or does it say iCloud?  If is says iCloud, download it.

If this is the general reason why a large portion of music library does not sync to iPod, you can select all affected songs at the same time, right-click selection, and Download.  Once all song files are stored locally, they should sync to iPod.

If this is not the reason for your problem, please post back with any additional details, such as any error message that appears when you attempt to sync.

Thanks for the tip.  I tried that and found very few with i Cloud origin

I feel that my library may be corrupted somehow.  Is it possible to delete the current library and start all over again?  Is there any way to download my library onto a thumb drive or onto the desktop and trash the current library then get a new iTune ap?

The other possibility is that iTunes has lost track of the song files, for a large portion of your song files.  This can happen, if you move or delete song files outside of iTunes.  Try to play one of the songs that does not sync to iPod...  In other words, find a song that does not sync to iPod, AND does not show location of iCloud.  Are you able to play it in iTunes?  Does the local copy of that song file still exist, where iTunes expects to find it?

Yes, but there's no need to do those things...

Your iTunes "library" file is only a database that stores overall and supporting library data, and tracks where all of your media files are located.  It does not actually contain your iTunes media; it just links to the media files, which are stored separately on your computer's storage (if stored locally).  If you did a Get Info on one of your songs, and looked at location, it shows file path where iTunes expects it to be stored.  Unless you changed where iTunes stores its media files by default (in iTunes preferences Advanced pane), the iTunes Media folder location is described in this document

Manage and back up your iTunes media library - Apple Support

The iTunes Media folder is located in your iTunes folder, which is in your user account Music folder.  The iTunes Media folder is organized into sub-folders by media type, artist name, and album name.

NOTE:  Depending on your current iTunes settings (especially for a Windows user), songs you added manually to your iTunes library may be stored at the location where they were added.  For example, if you have a Downloads folder, and you added downloaded song files from that folder (to your iTunes library), iTunes may be accessing those song files from that Downloads folder, not from its iTunes Media folder.

To do what you ask, you can create a new iTunes library

Open a different iTunes Library file or create a new one - Apple Support

Then, add your song files, from your existing iTunes Media folder (or wherever they are stored locally) to the new iTunes library.  You don't need to use a thumb drive, or re-install the iTunes app.
