Q: I just bought an iTunes movie rental and it has disappeared

Why did a rental movie I purchased last night disappear from my downloads and is not listed under 'purchased'?

Last night I used iTunes Store on my iPad 4th gen to purchase X-Men: Apocalypse as an HD rental movie. I wanted to download a bit of it and start watching while the rest downloaded, as I've done with other rentals. I couldn't find a way to play the movie while it was downloading (at this point it was up to 800MB) so I pressed the small 'Stop' button on the movie overview page, thinking "I've tried everything else, so maybe this will switch to a play button".

The 'Downloads' tab at the bottom of the app then disappeared. In the 'Purchased' tab there was no record of X-Men: Apocalypse. I clicked the 'Rent HD' button thinking it would start the download again, but instead it said a pop-up came up with something like "You've already purchased this rental but have not completed the download. Go to Downloads". While this pop-up was showing the 'Downloads' tab appeared down the bottom of the app, but when I closed the pop-up it would disappear again without giving me a chance to open it.

The only reference I can find to having paid for the rental movie is by opening iTunes on my Mac Air and checking my 'Purchase History' under Account Info. I've clearly paid for it, there's an order number and purchase date. But even on my Mac iTunes it doesn't list the rental movie in 'Purchased'. When I go to the X-Men: Apocalypse page and click 'Rent HD' in Mac iTunes it doesn't register that I've purchased it already (unlike the strange limbo I'm in on my iPad) and it seems that I would be charged twice if I continue.

Can someone please advise the best way for me to download this rental movie without having to pay for it again?

iPad 2, iOS 9.3.5
