all browsers running slow

Simple summary of what has been done up until now:

-Upgraded to Sierra

-Entire OS ran slow, internet was non functional in browsers, however dropbox and app store could access internet.

- Wiped my computer as I had no backups (I know, I'm an idiot)

-Used internet to recovery to reinstall lion, then upgraded to El Capitan (What I had before I upgraded to Sierra)

-Reinstalled apps, and most everything works fine EXCEPT any browsers I've used (Firefox, Safari, and Chrome)

These browsers seem to run very slow- can still access the internet but pages take much longer to load, and streaming video is almost impossible. When typing this, the words occasionally "trail behind" what I'm actually typing , similar to a lag from lack of ram.

If things are lagging, I can occasionally speed them up or spur them on by clicking the wi-fi icon, and letting it look for networks.

Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated.

Likely because the developer did not anticipate changes in Sierra. Developers can get early releases of upcoming Mac OS versions to make sure their products remain compatible. Some don't due to workload, under-staffing or, in some cases I've seen, abject laziness when working with Mac projects.

Unless something else pops up as the culprit, I'd talk to the developer.

Also, it was running fine on El Capitan, and I am currently running El Capitan. I haven't re-upgraded to Sierra, as I was unsure of whether or not the same problem would repeat itself.

Removed the program, then restarted- the problem remains- I don't think that program was the cause.

Any other ideas? Thanks for all of your advice thus far.

Please read If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support. Although it addresses Safari specifically, the information it contains can be applied to other browsers also.

You might benefit from additional RAM.

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on an early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.
