Congratulations on your new iPhone 7 running iOS 10! I understand that your Wi-Fi Assist is not working as expected. Wi-Fi assist should activate your data connection when the Wi-Fi signal is weak.
How Wi-Fi Assist works
With Wi-Fi Assist, you can stay connected to the Internet even if you have a poor Wi-Fi connection. For example, if you're using Safari with a poor Wi-Fi connection and a webpage doesn't load, Wi-Fi Assist will activate and automatically switch to cellular so that the webpage continues to load. You can use Wi-Fi Assist with most apps like Safari, Apple Music, Mail, Maps, and more.
When Wi-Fi Assist is activated, you'll see the cellular data icon in the status bar on your device.
Because you'll stay connected to the Internet over cellular when you have a poor Wi-Fi connection, you might use more cellular data. For most users, this should only be a small percentage higher than previous usage. If you have questions about your data usage, learn more about managing your cellular data or contact Apple Support.
You can use Wi-Fi Assist with any iOS device with iOS 9 or later, except for these models: iPhone 4s, iPad 2 Wi-Fi+Cellular, iPad (3rd generation) Wi-Fi+Cellular, and iPad mini (1st generation) Wi-Fi+Cellular.
About Wi-Fi Assist
If this is not working as expected, you can try a simple restart for the iPhone. Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
You can also reset your iPhone's network settings to resolve the issue. Please note. Resetting these settings will remove all previously saved Wi-Fi networks.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.
This should have your Wi-Fi Assist working as expected. Thanks for using Apple Support Communities to post your question. Have a great day. -
Oct 18, 2016 6:55 PM in response to sterling rby Romplestiliskin,Nada. Wifi signal and strength is stellar. If anything, it could be a carrier issue. It still happens a lot. Sometimes, wifi calling stops altogether. I noticed the same at the Apple Store with a genius rep who is on the same carrier as I and iPhone 7; however, I can't put much weight into that since the Apple Store's wife isn't the best. Mine on the other hand is solid!

Oct 18, 2016 7:01 PM in response to sterling rby Romplestiliskin,Oh, I should clarify. It's not Wifi "Assist" rather it's Wifi "Calling". This feature enables me not to use my carrier minutes and everything goes through wifi. I can keep my phone in Airplane Mode while travelling and then make calls like I was at home without incurring any charges. I am sure not many people know about this feature?
