Q: Sierra OS upgrade complications

I had some difficulty installing the Sierra OS on my mac book pro and ended up doing a command + R recovery. Since then, 1. my finder looks different and my files are not where they use to be and 2. iMovie is crashing. Are either of these problems due to the recovery action? If so, would a time machine restore help/fix this issue?

MacBook Pro, macOS Sierra (10.12)

    Updating from what macOS version?

What do yo mean by Finder looks different?

Where were files and where are they now?

Have you tried deleting and reinstalling iMovie?

Yes, I would restore from Time Machine. Who know went went wrong when you tried to install Sierra

Thanks. The imovie problem is solved. There was an upgrade to imovie. Once that was installed, it started working fine again.

    As to the finder,

    - the upgrade was from El Capitan.

    - now everything is in Finder under Favourites under All My Files

    - I used to save them in a specific folder that was in the Finder called MySpace. I had sub folders for photos, docs etc

    - I can find the files but I have to go via Spotlight

    - These files appear under Users but they don't appear directly in the Finder.

Is a restore from Time Machine the best solution? I haven't done a restore from Time Machine before. I assume there are links on the Apple website that will direct me?

All my Files isn't a folder. It is a view to all your files, just as the name implies. If you open your Documents, Downloads or Music folders you'll find your stuff exactly where you expect to find them.

Yes, but my problem is that my folder with all that stuff in them has disappeared since the upgrade to Sierra. So my question is, "how do I reinstate my finder to how it was before the upgrade to Sierra"?

Look in the Finder sidebar for iCloud and select it. Do you see a Documents folder? If so are your missing folders there?

Yes, there is a documents folder there and that is intact. But it seems that I had another place that I was using for storing stuff. On my mac's hard drive? Which would suggest that I wasn't using iCloud for this stuff. I can find the folder that I am looking for but I need to do a search for it. It is not appearing in the primary finder location (like the documents folder). I am sorry that I can't explain why I was storing stuff here and not in icloud.

Sorted. It was easy once I had finally figured out what the problem was. "Hard drive doesn't show up in Finder"
