Q: Autocorrect can't be turned off?

L.S.,

For some reason my iPad keeps auto-correcting me, at least in my e-mails and Evernote, even when I turn off both Auto Correct and Check Spelling. Still those infuriating boxes with blue letters show up underneath what I'm writing, and it then it replaces my text. I'm a writer, and this renders the iPad almost useless for me.

Can this be fixed?

iPad Pro, iOS 10.0.2

    Yes.

Those "infuriating boxes with blue text", (which, by the way, I happen to appreciate) are known as "Predictive Text".

No, they didn't. But they did after I turned off the Autocorrect option on the HARDWARE keyboard. You open it under Keyboard, and there's a separate Autocorrect switch there. Problem solved.
