I recently updated to iOS 10, and shortly after started seeing chinese characters in my lock screen, under the date & time. I checked the language and region settings and only see English and Philippines selected which is correct. Not sure what other settings I need to change? I also tried changing my lock screen and same characters are still there.

Switch off the chinese calender; set "alternative calenders" (translated from german; don't know the original setting term) to "off"
My friend had the same problem. The language under the date and time was either Japanese or Chinese. I fixed the problem by resetting all settings in Settings.
I bought it new less than a year ago.
I saw a separate thread about alternate calendars being enabled and seems to have fixed it.
For some reason the buddhist calendar was selected hence the reason was seeing chinese in my lock screen. Weird though how it just came up though after I updated to iOS 10.
