Q: Safari crashing every few days, will not force quit

Okay. Here is my problem.

Since updating to Sierra, every few days this happens:

Safari locks up completely. If I force quit and restart, it locks up again on restart, and then will not force quit - I have to restart using the power button (which I do not like doing this often on already elderly equipment).

Tech support suggested nuking plist and reinstalling extensions. I did both of these things, but it is still happening. (In other words, tech support is stumped too, so I'm coming here to see if anyone has had the same issue).

It always works again after a restart, so troubleshooting using safe mode is not possible in this case - it's going to fix it because a restart always does.

I'm fairly sure I have some kind of corruption somewhere, but am at a loss as to where else to look. I have cleared history, I have emptied caches...

Anyone got any bright ideas as to what to try next? (Please don't suggest using another browser: Chrome is usable but slooooow and Firefox is basically too slow to do anything with, so I really need Safari to keep up my productivity levels).

Mid-2010 27-inch iMac running macOS Sierra 10.12, Safari 10.

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items.  Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library./Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

As I mentioned, I already did clear history and caches - thanks for the reminder, but I'm past that point.

Apple had you reinstall the extensions. Try disabling them. Then test. There may be an extension causing the problem.

the problem isn't extensions, plugins, cache or amything third-party --- it's a problem with Sierra and Safari (maybe webkit-related).

That would mean turning off my adblocker. Safari would then crash every few minutes. I'll try disabling the other extension.

Not the same symptoms. It isn't locking up my system just leaving Safari neither launched nor shut down.

Try running this program in your normal account , then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

I have the same problem on a late 2010 iMac, as do lots of other people judging by the number of similar posts. I have stopped trying to fix the problem and started using Firefox instead of Safari and haven't experienced any problems since using Firefox.

Do you have a suggestion for an alternative anti-virus? (Assume I am broke - I'm not far from it).

At the present time, there isn't any need for an anti-virus program on a Mac unless you handle a lot of Windows files. Many anti-virus programs actually interfere withe the computer's operation. If you feel you must have one, the link below seems less intrusive than  many others.
