Q: Freezes and restarts on 2015 5K iMac running El Capitan and I'm ready to panic myself

Hi guys,

If I posted my Etre Check and Panic reports, could someone tell me what's been causing random freezes and restarts on my new-ish 5K iMac running El Capitan? I'm a designer/retoucher and I'm in the middle of a big job, of course.

It's been happening on and off for a few months. I've wiped my startup drive and performed fresh OS installs (didn't even use Migration Assistant just to be safe), three times. I've installed apps one at a time trying to narrow down what's causing this but haven't been able to.

At first I thought it was my Logitech G502 mouse because when I switched to an old mouse for a couple weeks the problems went away. But yesterday, while listening to iTunes via Airplay and working in InDesign, the system froze again.

I'm wondering if it might be SoftRAID and/or my two external ThunderBay 4 RAIDs?

Thanks in advance!

Steve

We can take a stab, please post a complete EtreCheck report and if we don't see anything you can post your latest KP report.

Common causes of KP's are related to RAM. I see you upgraded the RAM on your iMac. Please remove the RAM you installed and then retest. If the KPs stop then you know you have found the problem. iMacs are extremely sensitive to RAM, what brand and of RAM did you install and where did you buy it from?

I only use Crucial. I got burned with bargain RAM back in the 90s. Never again.

Where did you buy the Crucial RAM?

Also, please remove it and re-test to see if the KPs are RAM related.

Apologies, I prematurely hit the reply button.

Would you be able to see more from the panic report itself? I haven't had a freeze in a couple weeks, until yesterday. I ran Etre Check immediately after that, and saved the panic report from Console.

I wish there was an easier/quicker way to know if it was the RAM or not. If the RAM wasn't the issue, I could still go weeks without a panic, and I need as much memory as I can get because I work on very large Photoshop files with dozens and dozens of layers, with Illustrator and InDesign as well.

Back in the day I used to use Memtest. Would that or one of the other RAM checkers like TechTool do any good? It would probably take an entire day and I wouldn't be able to work, and of course I'm in the middle of a few deadlines I can't miss.

Thanks so much for your help.

I needed it quickly so I ordered it from Amazon this time. I usually purchase direct from Crucial.

The most foolproof method of seeing if the KPs are RAM related is to remove it. That is also the most simple method. Using software is hit or miss and Tech Tool is pretty much worthless. Besides removing RAM is a less than 5 minute process on your computer. You have spent more time posting than it would have taken to remove it!

Ha. I know that. I'm pretty good with the mechanics—I installed a Core 2 Duo in my old first gen Intel iMac a couple years ago—although I wouldn't want to do that again.

I was just saying that it's been two weeks since I last had a kernel panic and I use my computer all day every day, for work. So I can remove the RAM, sure, but I'll have to wait weeks for another panic, which may or may not come, before. So if there was a quicker way to test my RAM, I'd be all for it.

Would you recommend another source for RAM? I always thought Crucial was the pinnacle of memory for Mac?

    Thanks again.

And here's my panic report, just in case.

Okay, your KP occurred when OS X "saw"

    com.softraid.driver.SoftRAID 5.5.5

    at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch 4718

I would first ensure both applications are up-to-date and designed to work with the version of Mac OS you have installed. If they are up-to-date you have two choices, first is to review your next KP report and determine if the KP occurred at the same time, if so  then please uninstall them per the developers instructions.  The second choice is to uninstall immediately. BTW, I have seen similar behavior from LittleSnitch which frankly is now outdated and IMO of little value.

Thank you sir. I'll look into both. I'm going to send that panic report to the SoftRAID and Little Snitch developers and see what they say. I can live without Little Snitch but not SoftRAID.

Over the weekend I decided to run Memtest. Actually, I ran Rember first but decided to boot into single user mode and run Memtest to be sure. I tested my Crucial ram first, then swapped it for my stock RAM. No errors. I know it's possible for RAM to still be iffy even if Memtest doesn't catch any issues, but that has to be rare, right?

So I took your advice and removed the Crucial RAM and have been running on my meager 8GB of stock RAM for the last 3 days without issue. So far.

So now I play the waiting game.

I'll post an update if/when there is a development.

    Thanks again!

I've been running my iMac with only stock RAM for 10 days now without a single hiccup. I'll go another week before I contact Crucial and ask for an exchange. Or should I go with OWC?

By the way, I'm surprised how well it runs with only 8GB of RAM. MacOS' memory management is quite effective.

Seek help from Crucial first, they will likely replace the RAM and if that works then you are set. If it does not, then return it for a refund and then buy OWC RAM.
