Q: Upgraded to Sierra and can't import pictures

I upgraded to Sierra and my camera, a Canon EOS 20D is no longer properly recognized.

Previous to the upgrade:

When I connected the camera Photos would open automatically. I'd close it and open Photoshop. In PS I'd select Import->From Device and my camera would be identified. When I select the camer the picture thumbnails were displayed.

Post upgrade:

When I connect the camera Photos does NOT open automaticall. If I open Photos it does not see a camera attached.

In PS when I select Import->From Device my camera is represented but the icon is of an external drive. When I select the icon nothing is displayed.

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12), 27"; Retina 5k

    Hello ChuckSto,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I know having an issue with your Mac and your camera is not what you expect. The good news is the following steps will be helpful in resolving your issue of your camera not being recognized:

If nothing happens when you connect your digital camera

    Try the following:

    • Make sure the USB cable is properly connected to your camera and the computer. If your computer has another USB port, try plugging the cable into it.

    • Check your camera to make sure it’s turned on and set to the correct mode for importing photos. See the instructions provided with your camera.

    • Check your camera’s memory card for damage. See the documentation that came with your camera for more information on this or other possible problems.

I have exactly the same issue - and the same camera - upgraded a new 27 inch iMac, plugged the camera in using the cable I always use - nothing. Photos doesn't open automatically and if I open it manually it doesn't recognise the camera. Tried and tested everything, the camera and cable work with my MacBook and PC.  What next?

I have the same problems. After upgrade, it does show the canon as a device, but no images are displayed. So it does get recognised by image capture, but i cannot see any images.

As I mentioned in my original post, I've been using the camera with my iMac for some time now. When the problem appeared I tried different cables and different ports.

I ending up spending more than 2.5 hours with Apple support over multiple calls. Bottom line, Sierra and the Canon are currently incompatible.

You can use a flash card reader without issue. It is a bit more cumbersome in that you have to copy the files from the flashcard to a drive on your iMac before you import.

Apple support confirmed it is a compatibility problem and we will have to wait for Canon to address it if we want to connect directly to the camera.

Waiting for Canon to do something seems

    1) Unlikely to happen and

    2) a bit rubbish as a solution

We buy Apple products as creatives because they work better for us than Windows or any other options - when they suddenly stop working it feels like a VERY expensive mistake that I haven't made. The 20D is a very popular camera and surely Apple need to tweak or fiddle with Photos to make it wake up and take notice when the camera is plugged in.

Come on Apple - don't leave us out in the cold, write a patch, do some magic, earn our love !

I somewhat fixed the problem for me. Image capture will still not start automatically when the camera is attached, but i can see the images now and i can import them to my computer.

    My Solution:

    - Upgrade the camera firmware to the latest version (2.0.3) (http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eos20d/eos20d_firmware-e.html)

    - Set the communication mode to PTP instead of "Normal".

Once i did that, i could see the images in image capture again.

It's crazy that we have to wait for Canon to update their camera firmware. Given that it is much harder to update camera firmware, this really should be something Apple itself handles, especially since it was working fine prior to the upgrade to Sierra.

This does resolve the issue with the Canon. Thank you.

I should add that I had previously upgraded the camera's firmware but it didn't resolve it. The real solution here is in using the PTP communication protocol.
