Q: Photos program is giving me a gray triangle with exclamation mark after I edit a photo. The only way I have found to restore the photo is turn off the program and restart it. I have tried repairing the library to no avail.

Photos program is giving me a gray triangle with an exclamation mark in the thumbnail area after I edit a photo. If i multiple click on the triangle I can get the photo to come up but sometimes the edit is still present, sometimes not. This happens each time I edit a photo. I understand this means the program has lost contact between the thumbnail and the original. I have not been inside the library to do anything. I can get rid of the triangle and restore the photo if I turn off the program and restart it. I have tried repairing the library but this did not help. Any help would be appreciated as it is a real pain to have to turn off and restart the program after each edit.  Thanks

How are you editing?  With the built-in adjustments, or with photo editing extensions?

Are you using iCloud Photo Library?

This looks like a possible system problem.  Try to isolate the issue.

    • Test for a while which a new Photos Library created for testing.  If you do not have the same problem with a new library, it may be a problem with your current photos library. Is the library on your system drive or on an external drive?
    • If a new library does not work at all, test Photos in Safe mode:
      https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

This will disable third party system extensions.  Does Photos work in safe mode?

If safe mode does not work either, test in a different user account:  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443 to check if you have problematic preferences files or similar.
