Sierra upgrade - vertical red line (MBP 15" 2010)

I upgraded to Sierra this afternoon, and upon restart, a single vertical red line now appears (right from turning the power on, through in to OSX).

I tried a few things, including booting with CMD-OPTION-P-R to reset NVRAM, but no luck.

FYI, screengrab doesn't show the red line.

If I mirror the screen on my TV though the DVI port, again, no red line.

Screenshot (via camera!) attached.

Grateful for any thoughts!

If it wasn't for the massively suspicious timing, I'd have thought it was a hardware problem - but very strange that it appeared on boot up after upgrading.

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, JJSE.

If I’m understanding your post right, after upgrading to macOS Sierra you have a vertical red line in your display. I know it can become bothersome to have issues with a computer display, so I’m happy to help you get this resolved.

Excellent job trying NVRAM reset already. Let's try some steps next that will help isolate and troubleshoot the issue you're experiencing. First, please Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac . If the issue persists, then create a new admin user account to test the issue in. Follow the steps in How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac to create a new user.

After you have done that, test out your Mac while booted into safe mode. When booting into safe mode, some software is prevented from automatically loading/opening, certain checks are performed, and unneeded caches are deleted. You can find the steps on how to boot into safe mode here: macOS Sierra: Start up in safe mode . Once you have tested in safe mode, reboot your Mac and then test again to see if the issue persists.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Take care.

Hello again, JJSE.

If you still had the line in your display while booted in to a new user account, and while booted in to safe mode, you may be experiencing an issue with your hardware. To be sure, disconnect any peripherals connected to your Mac and then boot into Recovery. To boot into Recovery, restart your Mac and then immediately hold down Command (⌘)-R on your keyboard. It should take you to a screen that says "macOS Utilities" and has options such as restoring from Time Machine backup and reinstalling macOS. If you don't see the line on your display while booted into Recovery, its unlikely you're experiencing a hardware problem.

If this is the case, back up your Mac next, and then reinstall macOS. Reinstalling is not going to erase your data but it's always good to have a fresh backup just in case. Time Machine is a great way to make sure you have everything backed up. You can find the steps on how to back up in Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac Once you're backed up, follow the steps under the "If you're reinstalling for other reasons" section in How to reinstall macOS .

When you initially booted to Recovery, if the line was still present, the next best step would be to to bring your Mac in for service. You can locate repair stores using this link: Find Locations .

Take care.
