Q: Safari freezes whenever I quit

I really want to use safari, however over the past couple months something about it has changed and made it practically unusable. Whenever I quit (pressing command+Q), it freezes and I need to force quit in order to actually close the application. I've looked a bit into reinstalling safari, but apparently it's "required" by MacOS Sierra so you can't modify or delete it in the first place.

If anybody can help me with this it would be much appreciated!

Go step by step and test.

    1. Disable Extensions and test.

        Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Uncheck boxes beside “Enable Extension”  and test.

Enable Extensions one by one and test.

To uninstall any extension, select it and click the “Uninstall” button.

    2. Delete Caches

Close all windows and quit all applications.

Hold "option" key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.

        Select "Library" from the dropdown.

        Library > Caches > com.apple.Safari

Right click the com.apple.Safari file and select "Move To Trash.

        Test Safari.

    3. Delete com.apple.Safari.plist file and test.

        Empty the Trash.

        Quit all applications.

Hold the option key down and click the "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.

Select "Library" from the drop down.

        Library > Preferences >  com.apple.Safari.plist

Right click on it and select "Move it to Trash".

        Restart.    Relaunch Safari.

If this doesn’t help, “Put Back” the com.apple.Safari.plist

Right click on  the Trash icon in the Dock and select “Open”.

Right click on the com.apple.Safari.plist and select “Put Back”.

    4. If the steps posted above don't help:

Please run EtreCheck and post the report here.

        http://etresoft.com/etrecheck

Download it, open Downloads folder, click on it to open and select ”Open”.

“Choose a problem” from the popup menu box and then “Start EtreCheck” in the dialog.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard”

and then paste it when you reply.

    1. I have no safari extensions installed.

    2. com.apple.safari is a folder for me, and it's quite large (126mb). In your answer you said "delete the com.apple.safari FILE" so I'm just a little nervous that folder includes other important files.

    3. I tried deleting the file and restarting but it didn't have any impact.

I also ran the EtreCheck scan. Here's the report it gave.

The suggestion was to delete the file com.apple.Safari.plist, not the Safari folder.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

    Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

Most people advise not to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.

After un-installing, use this program to make sure you got all the pieces.
