Have you upgraded to macOS Sierra? If so, go to system preferences --> security and privacy --> and select "allow your apple watch to unlock your mac."

Check that your Mac meets the system requirements for Auto Unlock (a mid 2013 or newer model is required):
System requirements for Continuity on Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support
And that you are following all of the instructions here:
I think this option is available only once you set up two-factor authentication as described in "Switch from two-step verification to two-factor authentication".
Update: if the information in your signature is correct and up-to-date (MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)), then unfortunately this feature won't work for you as it requires macOS Sierra and an MBP from late 2013 or newer. I know it won't make you feel better, but I'm in a similar situation with my MBP being from early 2013.
